Crazy Rich Asians

This poster is of a Movie called “Crazy Rich Asians”. It’s movie about an Asian women who is raised in America, and is seeing a man from Singapore, who turns out to belong to one of the wealthiest families of Singapore. The social class differences between the two lovers cause problems in their relationship, however their love for each other wins in the end. In this critique I’m going to look at the design elements of this poster, and a brief overview of the cultural elements that are present.

I personally love the design of this poster. At the first look, I think the colors, , background elements and foreground all work really well together, and are complimenting each other. The poster is aesthetically pleasing to look at, as it is simple even though it is very colorful. Everything is centered really well in the poster. However it stretches to the sides as well, giving it a very balanced look. The creator of the poster also hasn’t used too many different fonts that cause a polluted look; he has used the same font in 3 different sizes. Since this is a movie, the name of the movie should always be the focal point in my opinion, and using a big and contrasting font with a thin bordering around it had done this very successfully. There are no bulky borders, around it the poster it self. The poster is very balanced and there seems to be no unnecessary clutter or unwanted empty space. The color that is used here makes the poster catchy and attractive to look at. The mixture of cold and warm colors gives a good contrast that doesn’t hurt the eyes of the viewer. All in all, the poster gives a sense of unity where all the design elements work together.

Looking at this poster from a cultural perspective, I think it does a good job of representing Singapore and the Asian culture that was trying to be depicted in the movie. We can see that designer has used some traditional elements and icons such as Chinese Fans, however some might think of it as cliché. There is a peacock that represents wealth and romance. All these are very fitting as these are very obvious signs in relation to the movie. The two actors depicted, are obviously in love, and that is very evident though the way they are posing. If a person who hasn’t seen the movie has a look at the poster, they can definitely get a hint about what to expect when they watch it.

Finally, I would like to say that this is a very successfully made movie poster. In my opinion the design elements work really together. This movie is about classy rich Asians and that is reflected really well in the poster design. This was achieved simplicity and good designing. I could not find any flaws as per say. There are some cultural elements as well, adding to the meaning and context of the movie.
